Sending and Receiving Messages

When you send a message, type in the edit box and press ENTER. Your screen reader says who is chatting, along with the message. If you want to keep chatting, just keep your screen reader in Forms mode, and stay in the chat edit box. Your computer also makes a sound when you get messages. It also makes a different sound when someone enters a chat room.

Reviewing Messages

To review messages after they have appeared on the screen, go into Browse mode and use your screen reader's function that skips among headings to look at the names of the people chatting. Arrow down, once you find a name to read the message. To get back to the chat edit box, use your screen reader's ability to jump among form fields or (JAWS/NVDA/Window-eyes) the ability to jump among edit fields. Go back into Forms mode when you want to chat again.

Indication of New Public Messages

If you happen to move out of your web browser and go back to chat again, the number of new public messages appears in the browser title bar. Use your screen reader's ability to read window titles to see how many new messages are waiting for you.

Private Messages

If you get a private message, your screen reader tells you that. Your computer also makes a different sound than it does for public messages. To get to private messages, go to the top of the chat screen and click the Private messages link. Once you get there, you will see a link for each person you get a private message from. Click that link, and you can message back and forth privately. You land in the edit box, so you will have to look up for the message to which you want to reply. When you are done chatting to someone in private, click the Users List button. The resulting screen gives you the ability to go into a room, or to chat privately with another representative.
