Southwestern Division - Awarded the 2020 Pinnacle award on the USACE Best Places To Work

The Southwestern Division (SWD), headquartered in Dallas, is a Major Subordinate Command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. There are four districts (Galveston, TX, Fort Worth, TX, Little Rock, AR, and Tulsa, OK) that are part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division, which provides diverse engineering and construction expertise and other services in all or part of seven states.

Most of SWD’s work falls into three major mission areas: Civil Works, including flood risk management, navigation, hydropower, water supply, recreation, regulatory, and disaster relief; Military Programs, including engineering, construction, and environmental management services for the Army and Air Force; and Interagency and International Services, which includes planning and engineering and construction management services for other federal, state and local agencies.

Fort Worth District - Awarded 2020 USACE Best Places to Work

The Fort Worth District, established in 1950 after disastrous floods in the area, is responsible for water resources development in two-thirds of Texas, and military design and construction in Texas and parts of Louisiana and New Mexico. The District:

  • covers a geographical area of approximately 140,000 square miles and employs more than 1,300 team members.
  • has constructed 25 lakes, two major floodways and many local projects. These projects cost $2.6 billion to build, but have prevented more than $68 billion in flood damages.
  • operates and maintains reservoirs and lakes for outdoor recreation opportunities for millions of visitors annually, while also furnishing approximately 35 percent of Texas’ water supply.
  • supervises design and construction at Army and Air Force installations in three states, including facilities such as family housing, training and aircraft facilities, schools, child care centers, clinics and hospitals.
  • executed a total of 2,553 actions totaling approximately $1.9 billion in fiscal year 2020.

Tulsa District - Awarded the 2020 World-Class Workplaces on the USACE Best Places to Work

The Tulsa District was established in 1939 and is one of four districts that make up the Southwestern Division. Its civil works boundaries include Oklahoma and parts of southern Kansas and northern Texas.

The district's Civil Works mission is one of the largest in the Corps of Engineers; it includes 38 multipurpose lakes which include five lock and dams on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. Although the primary purpose of district lakes is flood reduction, they also provide recreation, water supply, hydropower, navigation, and fish and wildlife habitat. The district's 150 miles of the MKARNS boasts the most inland, ice-free river port in America and provides waterway commerce to the heartland of the country. District projects have prevented billions of dollars in flood damages and the district's eight hydropower facilities provide about $52 million in annual sales.

The district has 240 parks with more campsites -- 6,000-- than any other district in the Corps. The Tulsa District's military construction mission provides engineering and construction management services to two Army and four Air Force installations. During the last 10 years, the district has managed the design and construction of more than $1 billion in facilities for its military customers.
