About

The University of Kentucky Graduate School is a thriving community of scholars, researchers, and students, all dedicated to improving lives through excellence in education, research, leadership, creative work, service, and healthcare.

We are proud of our reputation for excellence. Here are a few reasons why we believe that The University of Kentucky (UK) would best fit your personal educational goals.

  • UK is one of only seven universities in the U.S. that have Colleges of Agriculture, Engineering, Law, Medicine, and Pharmacy on a single campus.
  • Home to nearly a dozen research centers, including the Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) and the Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability and the Environment, UK has been awarded over $300 million annually in federal, state, and industry research grants and contracts.
  • The William T. Young Library is among the world’s leading research libraries; its book endowment is the largest among public universities.
  • UK’s scholars – students, faculty and alumni – have been the recipients of many prestigious awards including the Nobel and Pulitzer prizes, and honored by distinguished organizations such as the Rhodes Trust, the Fulbright Scholar Program, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and the Metropolitan Opera.

About UK

As Kentucky’s flagship institution, the University plays a critical leadership role by promoting diversity, inclusion, economic development, and human well-being throughout the state and beyond. UK is home to sixteen colleges, and nearly 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students representing all 50 states and 115 countries.

Diversity
A diverse graduate student body brings benefit to our entire campus. The graduate programs of the University of Kentucky invite applicants from all backgrounds, and want to ensure that all enrolled students find a welcoming community on our campus and in our city. The Graduate School and the UK community are committed to supporting individual students and programs by connecting them to all available resources, and working with them to support their success.

Housing
On-campus and campus-adjacent housing is available for full-time graduate students and their families. Efficiencies, apartments, townhomes, and duplex units are available, many with furniture, laundry facilities, and utilities included in the cost. Campus transportation services are available to residents, as well as on-site parking.

Professional Development Resources
The Graduate School offers services to students that complement their degree coursework and support their career pursuits. Information about activities and opportunities, such as workshops, seminars, conferences, grants, and cultural events are promoted weekly. Student organizations such as the Graduate Student Congress, the International Student Congress, the Black Graduate & Professional Student Association, and the UK Society of Postdoctoral Scholars arrange regular academic, professional, and social events for graduate students.

Funding Opportunities

Assistantships
More than 1,500 students work as Teaching (TA) or Research (RA) Assistants while in graduate school at UK. You are encouraged to contact the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) in department(s) of interest with questions about the availability of assistantships and the application process. Students who receive assistantships are provided monthly stipends, a tuition scholarship, and health insurance.

Fellowships
The University of Kentucky also offers fellowships in all areas of graduate education. A fellowship is a competitive, non-service award made to academically qualified students who are pursuing a graduate degree. As with assistantships, the majority of fellowships provide monthly stipends, a tuition scholarship, and health insurance. Application deadlines for most fellowships are in the early spring and may require nomination by the DGS.

External Fellowships and Funding Sources
Grants and fellowships are available from a number of outside agencies, including private foundations, nonprofits, state, and federal sources. Aside from the obvious financial benefit, receipt of external funding exemplifies excellence in research, writing, and scholarship. Applying for external fellowships and grants is an excellent professional development experience for students who will be seeking academic career placement where grant funding is a necessity.

Student Life

Lexington, Kentucky is one of the safest cities in the U.S., and ranked as one of the best cities for college students. Located in the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region, Lexington is a big city with a small-town feel. Known as the “horse capital of the world”, Lexington has a healthy economy due to the number of corporations and industries located here.

On campus or off, there is no shortage of opportunities for students to get involved in the community. Hundreds of student organizations, ranging from politics to club sports, from leadership and service to art and culture, the Office of Student Involvement has something for everyone.

The University of Kentucky is home to world-class talent. Concerts, plays, exhibitions, lectures, and sporting events are just a small sampling of the diversions open to students. The Singletary Center for the Arts regularly hosts musicians, speakers, artists, and performers. At Rupp Arena, students cheer the eight-time national championship men’s basketball team.

Students at UK also have access to health and fitness facilities, numerous dining options, and other personal and professional services. Visit www.uky.edu for more information about the opportunities and resources available.
