About

For more than 100 years, the students and faculty of OSU’s College of Pharmacy have been passionate about helping individuals and communities stay healthy. Our work takes us to places in Oregon and beyond where we educate patients and make sure they get the medical care they need. Our cutting edge research addresses some of the world’s most critical health challenges, and its impact saves lives. Our discoveries are today and tomorrow’s solutions.

Through the research and teaching of our world-renowned faculty, we seek to promote healthier, better lives for the people of Oregon. We recognize that the field of pharmacy is expanding and evolving, and we strive to offer the tools and knowledge that our students will need to adapt and thrive in tomorrow’s pharmacy profession.

The three foundational goals of the College of Pharmacy are to provide excellent professional education for our students and continuing education for practicing pharmacists; to foster outstanding and innovative research; and to contribute to public health by developing and promoting ways to provide medications safely and affordably.

At the core of all this is our student body.

On the way to completing your degree, you will spend two years on the Corvallis campus taking courses that will serve as your foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences. You will then broaden and apply your skills in pharmacy practice at our Portland campus, housed at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Finally, you will spend your final year implementing all that you’ve learned through hands-on experience at various pharmacy locations throughout the Northwest and the world. Through the program, you will gain all the tools needed to become a licensed pharmacist anywhere in the nation.

The College of Pharmacy will also help you gain the skills needed to pursue health care opportunities outside your traditional duties. Utilizing the skills they learned at OSU and OHSU, our graduates own private pharmacies and provide support for entire communities, manage regional districts for nationwide retailers, advise doctors in hospitals on the medication dosages for intensive care patients, work at mental health clinics to ensure that patients get the necessary medicines, assist with relief response during hurricanes and other natural disasters, and more.

Key Faculty

Just a few examples of the work of Oregon State University College of Pharmacy faculty:

  • Ali Olyaei is analyzing effective treatment of patients with kidney disease.
  • Taifo Mahmud is developing life-saving drugs from natural ecosystems.
  • Faculty members of the Targeted Drug Delivery reserach core are developing novel, nanoparticle-based systems for the tumor-selective delivery of cancer chemotherapeutic agents. These nanoparticle-based delivery systems are designed to silence key, cancer-driving generes in tumors as well as directly induce tumor cell death via inudiction of heat within the tumor mass.

Research and Labs

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty focus on three main areas of research: medicinal chemistry and natural products, pharmacology, and pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics.

Research programs in the Department of Pharmacy Practice include drug use management and pharmacoeconomic studies, cardiovascular drug effects and anti-infectious disease. The work with infectious disease overlaps with anti-infectives drug discovery research in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

History

A department of chemistry and pharmacy was established in 1898 at Oregon Agricultural College with a four-year program leading to a B.S. degree in pharmacy. Since those beginnings, the College of Pharmacy has served as part of the vanguard of the movement toward high-quality pharmacy education. This hundred-year history means the college has a broad network of alumni throughout Oregon and beyond. Read more about the history of the college on our website.
