This one-year combined residency and master of arts in teaching (MAT) offers a transformative approach to teacher preparation. You are embedded in one school for an entire year and surrounded by a community of support from fellow teacher residents, in-school teacher mentors, and NYU Steinhardt faculty. You gradually take on more responsibility throughout the year while studying alongside your teacher mentor in one of our partner schools, whether they are employing remote, in person, or hybrid learning.
With direct personal guidance and useful feedback from world-renowned NYU Steinhardt faculty, you learn how to serve all students, create an inclusive classroom environment, and become an integral part of a school and neighboring community.
This immersive design intentionally connects learning theory with hands-on practice to build your confidence and skills as a new teacher. When you’re not in the classroom, you meet online in the evening, twice per week. You learn your content area along with the essential skills that all teachers need to be effective in the classroom. In addition, our program will position you to serve your students through lessons on classroom management, culturally responsive teaching, and asset-based approaches to education.
We partner with district and charter schools in San Francisco, CA, Washington, DC, Danbury, CT, Palm Beach, Florida, Upstate and Central New York, and New York City.
