OVERVIEW OF CAREERS IN CORRECTIONS

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC) is responsible for the state adult correction system as well as for youthful offenders who have been sentenced as adults.  The Department’s employees are charged with the care, custody, and control of the inmate population.  The Department’s primary responsibility is the protection of the community, but we also recognize that assistance and opportunities for personal improvement must be provided to offenders in order for them to successfully effect positive changes in their lives.

State Correctional Institutions (SCI’s) are like communities inside a wall or fence.  The inmates in an institution require almost all of the services that people in a community require.  Therefore, you can find almost any job within an institution that you would find in your own community.  The Department employs counselors, psychological services assistants, psychological services specailists, licensed psychologists, dentists, teachers, accountants, registered nurses,  therapeutic activities specialists, social workers, and many other career titles.  We also employ a variety of tradesmen, including carpenters, masons, painters, electricians, and plumbers, to name a few, who lead crews of inmates and instruct them in their specific trades. Slightly more than half of the Department’s 16,000 employees are corrections officers.

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is responsible for overseeing the operation of:

-- 26 state correctional institutions, one motivational boot camp,

-- 13 community corrections centers, nearly 40 contract facilities,

-- a training academy,

-- approximately 16,000 employees and more than 51,000 inmates.
