CPHS offers a Doctor of Pharmacy as well as dual degrees to help you differentiate yourself from graduates across the nation.

The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree is the College’s largest program, with more than 25 years of credible training history. Campbell’s pharmacy graduates have maintained a 98 percent passage rate on the national pharmacy board exams and continue to build a legacy as successful leaders, innovators and contributors to the pharmacy profession. The PharmD degree is a four-year, full-time professional program. The rigorous curriculum combines basic and pharmaceutical sciences training and with extensive clinical application facilitated by amazing faculty. Students spend the first three years in the classroom, and complete one-month rotations during their summer breaks; the first summer is done in community pharmacy and the second year is done in hospital pharmacy. This allows students to apply what they have learned in their lectures and gives them early exposure to clinical practice.

During their final year of training, students complete nine four-week clinical rotations, gaining valuable experience in different practice settings. Rotations include training in advanced community pharmacy, advanced hospital, ambulatory care, drug information, geriatrics, internal medicine and much more which can include Cameroon, Africa. The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Started Inaugural Class in January 2014!

The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at Campbell University focuses on an evidence-supported curriculum, facilitated by wonderful faculty, centered on the patient and clinical practice in rural healthcare. The curriculum utilizes integrated, interdisciplinary education to prepare students to enter one of the most rewarding and fastest growing healthcare professions. Students who complete the program will earn a DPT degree and eligibility to become a candidate for initial licensure in the 53 jurisdictions recognized by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT).

Campbell University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program is a 36 month graduate degree program with 26.5 months of didactic education and 9.5 months of supervised clinical internships. Check out our clinical partners here! Graduates will receive the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree upon successful completion. There is a one-week summative session before graduation. The program starts in January with graduation in December. Most didactic courses are held on the main campus with a few online courses completed while on clinical internships in the final year of study.

The DPT program curriculum is a competency-based graduate education (minimum required skills for physical therapist education and normative model of PT education) curriculum based on a hybrid model pulling from traditional, lifespan, and problem based learning. The sequence of courses is designed to start with foundation courses in the basic sciences, professional development, and early clinical skills. Following the initial foundational coursework, subsequent courses teach clinical assessment and intervention, medical, surgical and pharmacy concepts in patient management from a population based lifespan perspective. Integrated curricular themes in service-learning and early clinical experiences, therapeutic exercise, and approach to patient care using a lifespan model is designed to enhance student learning and promote confidence in application of skills and didactic knowledge. Clinical reasoning courses are designed to enhance student interaction through problem-based learning, application of concepts/skills, and critical interpretation of evidence. The integrated service learning and clinical experiences are designed to encourage inter-professional interaction and collaboration. Assessment of students in the didactic/classroom years is by written examinations, performance on laboratory practical examinations, reflective journals, professional portfolio, and participation in small group activities.

Four clinical rotations occur throughout the curriculum with a six-week introductory internship in the spring of the second year. The remaining three clinical internships occur in the third program year with durations of 10-12 weeks for a total of 38 weeks of clinical training. Students must complete a clinical internship in a rural location. Clinical internships need to be completed in an acute/subacute or hospital, neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and elective clinical settings. Specialized settings may include burn/wound care, aquatic, industrial/vocational, and VA/military locations, home health, and school systems. Evaluation of clinical-year students includes a preceptor and student self-assessment of student performance using the clinical performance instrument (CPI), reflective narratives on patient care experience/delivery, case study presentations, and written examinations to prepare for licensure.

All students complete all didactic elements in the program at the same time. All students complete the required clinical experiences. The elective study available in our curriculum is spring semester of the third year.

Master of Physician Assistant Practice at CPHS – First Graduates!

The Physician Assistant Program at Campbell University is a 28 month graduate degree with 13 months of didactic education and 15 months of supervised clinical experience focused on an evidence-based, patient centered, clinically practical curriculum which will prepare students for the opportunity to enter one of the fastest growing health care professions. Students who complete the program will earn a Master of Physician Assistant Practice (MPAP) degree.

The PA program curriculum is a competency-based graduate medical education curriculum. The sequence of courses is designed to start with foundation courses in the basic sciences as well as clinical skills. Following the initial foundational coursework, subsequent courses teach clinical medical, surgical and pharmacotherapeutical concepts. Curriculum content is integrated such that the study of topics in a specific clinical discipline, such as cardiology, includes cardiology in clinical medicine, cardiology diagnostics such as EKG and appropriate laboratories, and cardiology pharmacotherapeutics. The history and physical examination course is a foundation course, teaching skills and techniques; the clinical assessment course which follows is a course in which the student practices those skills in supervised settings with patients. Assessment of students in the first year is by written examinations, performance on laboratory practical examinations, and participation in small group activities. Our amazing faculty are there to guide and assist you along the way!

The clinical rotations in the second year are five-week supervised clerkship experiences in the major disciplines, a seminar in evidence-based medicine and two clinical electives, this can be viewed on the curriculum page.

Campbell offers the only PA/MS in Public Health dual degree program in North Carolina, providing PA students with a solid foundation in health care research and outcomes evaluation. This educational background will help broaden students’ perspective to view health care services in terms of community or population needs, and teach them how to contribute as community health leaders, educators and policy makers, affecting the local, state and national health care systems.

CPHS offers three Masters Degrees:  Online MS in Clinical Research, MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and MS in Public Health

The MS in Clinical Research (MSCR) degree is now completely online.  MSCR is designed to expand students' understanding of clinical research, drug development and epidemiology. The program focuses on contemporary clinical research geared toward the development of new and improved therapies and diagnostics. To meet the growing demand for working adults interested in our program, the Department of Clinical Research developed a flexible online program. According to Clinical Today, the clinical research field is expanding more quickly than ever, and students with a background in clinical research are in high demand. The MS in Clinical Research program equips students with skills in critical thinking so that they will be prepared for careers in education, industry, medical, and research settings. CPHS offers an option to pursue dual degrees in both PharmD and MS in Clinical Research. The expected job outlook is strong for MS in Clinical Research candidates, as an anticipated 20,100 jobs in the field will open between 2008 and 2018. The curriculum provides students with an in-depth understanding of producing and interpreting medical evidence in a variety of practice settings. Students can enroll full-time to complete the program in two years with a variety of courses, or choose a part-time option. Graduates are prepared for leadership positions in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, government agencies, medical institutions, academic institutions and hospitals. Within these fields, graduates are qualified to work as clinical research associates, project managers, data managers, clinical monitors, biostatisticians and many other positions. Faculty members in the Department of Clinical Research are recognized experts, published scientists, committed mentors and proven professionals. They bring a combination of scholarly theory and real-world experience to the online classroom, providing students with innovative ideas and preparing them for the career they always wanted.

MSCR Admissions Requirements

The admissions requirements and standards are designed to ensure scholastic and professional success in the College’s MCSR degree program. Applications for admission to the MSCR degree program are evaluated by the Department of Clinical Research’s admissions committee. Acceptance into the graduate program is based on the overall record and ability of the applicant.

Application Cycle Applicants are considered for entrance during the fall, spring and summer semesters. While the Department operates on rolling admission, individuals are encouraged to submit their applications by the following deadlines:

PharmD./MS in Clinical Research Dual Degree (MSCR portion completely online)

The PharmD/MS in Clinical Research dual degree expands students’ understanding of new and improved drug therapies and diagnostics. Courses provide students with an in-depth understanding of producing and interpreting medical evidence in a variety of pharmacy practice settings including community, hospital, long-term care, government agencies, academics and much more. The MS in Clinical Research curriculum alone is two years and the PharmD curriculum alone is four years. The dual degree program allows several courses to satisfy requirements in both programs so that the PharmD/MSCR can be completed in four or five years, while others may finish the MS degree after receiving their PharmD. Please note that each student’s curriculum may be different based on previous educational experience. The dual degree program is open to accepted and enrolled pharmacy students. Interested pharmacy students must complete the pharmacy supplemental application and check the box for the dual PharmD/MSCR program. For students who decide to pursue the dual degree after submitting the Doctor of Pharmacy supplemental application, please contact Kimberly Whitted at kwhitted@campbell.edu with the subject line, “Dual PharmD/MSCR Interest”. Introduction to How Drugs are Developed

MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences & Dual PharmD/MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences

The MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree focuses on drug discovery, research, development and manufacturing. The program offers five unique tracks to provide students with specialized training to help them meet their career interests and goals. Students conduct research and complete lab-based courses in on-campus facilities that have the same innovative technology and equipment used in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. The hands-on, practical training prepares them for high-ranking positions in the pharmaceutical industry or the opportunity to continue their education in a PhD program. There is currently a critical need for trained pharmaceutical scientists in the United States. Graduate students in the Pharmaceutical Sciences program are able to engage in innovative and challenging research with state-of-the-art instrumentation in our Pharmaceutical Education & Research Center (PERC). Career opportunities for an individual with a MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences include: material science and formulation development, chemistry manufacturing controls, facility engineering, validation, and qualification. CPHS offers an option to pursue joint degrees in both PharmD and MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The projected job outlook for MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences candidates is strong, with an anticipated 30,000 job openings between 2008 and 2018.

The MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree offers training in five areas of study

MSPS Bioprocessing & Biotechnology TrackLeading to novel biomaterials applications The track in Bioprocessing & Biotechnology investigates pharmaceutical agents that are produced by living cells. The particular focus is on cells that are genetically engineered to produce foreign proteins. Areas of study include the growth of engineered cells, isolation of pharmaceutical proteins produced by the cells, and analytical techniques used to assess the identity, quality and potency of the proteins. Career pathways for graduates include bioprocess operation and development in this area of study.

• Track head: Dr. Bloom, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
• This is an “applied science” where the scientist is always trying to produce a new product
• Using cells to make protein therapeutics involves a three step process:
  1. Genetically-modified cells are grown
  2. A product is harvested from the cells
  3. Analytical testing is completed to verify the product is pure

MSPS Industrial Pharmacy TrackLeading to careers in dosage form design The track in Industrial Pharmacy prepares students for a career in research and development, production, and/or quality control within the pharmaceutical industry. Students engage in research under the guidance of a faculty member and complete courses focusing on formulation development and drug delivery systems.

MSPS Pharmaceutical Analysis TrackLeading to quality control and process validation careers Accurate analysis is imperative in the things we encounter daily—air we inhale, food we eat, clothes we wear, objects we use. This analysis is increasingly challenging and costly, especially the analysis of health-related products such as pharmaceuticals. The track in Pharmaceutical Analysis trains students to understand and perform appropriate analytical procedures ranging from sample preparation and analysis, to data interpretation with statistical significance and quality control.

• Track Head: Dr. Shin, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
• The goal of this track is to make sure the product is safe and “green” or environmentally friendly
• The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most tightly regulated industries, so students who complete this track are also prepared to enter any field of product analysis which may be less regulated, such as food or cosmetics.
• This track involves the separation of drugs to find the active and excipient ingredients in order to study them. Students also learn how drugs move through the body, allowing analysis of drugs after they have been taken.
• Students receive a lot of hands on training. They are involved in drug development through every stage and even after its development.
• Recommended degrees before entering the program: Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences

MSPS Pharmacology TrackLeading to positions in drug discovery The track in Pharmacology focuses on the interaction of drugs within biological systems. Students explore how drugs work and/or find new biological targets in order to discover and develop drugs to treat human patients. Students who complete this track are prepared for careers in drug discovery and development.

• Track Head: Dr. Breivogel, Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
• This track is based on and requires extensive background in cell biology, exploring how drugs interact with the body.
• Includes biochemical, cell, isolated organ and “whole” animal work (mice and rats).
• Recommended degrees before entering the program: Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Biology or Pharmaceutical Sciences

MSPS Multidisciplinary TrackLeading to positions in a variety of areas The Multidisciplinary track allows students to study multiple tracks in the MSPS curriculum. Students completing the Multidisciplinary track concentrate on one track, and have the opportunity to broaden their education by taking advanced laboratory-based courses from an additional track. Students who complete this track are prepared for careers in diverse areas of the pharmaceutical industry.

Master of Science in Public Health& Dual Degrees

The MS in Public Health (MSPH) degree provides students with a solid foundation in health care research and outcomes evaluation. The program focuses on the promotion of health and prevention of disease, rural health care research, community outreach and service learning opportunities. The two year, full-time MSPH curriculum centers on the elimination of local health care disparities, and development of local community health intervention and educational programs. Students spend the first year in the classroom while simultaneously developing individual research projects with a faculty advisor. The second year is dedicated to research projects and elective courses. Although not required, students are encouraged to seek internships and other research opportunities during their course of study to gain hands-on experience within the public health field. Located in central North Carolina, Campbell is an ideal setting for the program’s focus on rural health disparities and community outreach. Students and faculty work closely with Harnett County’s health department and health systems to assess and evaluate local health disparities. The Public Health program also partners with Campbell University’s Physician Assistant, Pharmacy and Osteopathic Medicine programs to conduct collaborative research and implement community programs. MSPH Admissions Admission into the Public Health program is granted on a rolling basis; however, students may only begin the program in the fall semester. An interview with department faculty or staff will be granted to applicants deemed eligible for admission upon review of the completed application. Applicants from all academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Students in the charter class bring experience from a wide variety of professions including medicine, military, athletic training, psychology, health care communications and more. Campbell University’s main campus occupies over 1300 acres in the Harnett County community of Buies Creek, North Carolina. Health Professions Readiness & Enrichment program (H-PREP) is an intense, development program offered at Campbell University’s main campus in Buies Creek, North Carolina on May 18 – 22, 2014. The program exposes students to a formative experience that combines academic instruction with professional development in an inter-disciplinary environment. This year, the theme focuses on issues unique to community and rural practice across the health professions. Preference for admission to the program will be given to individuals who are interested in practicing in rural and underserved areas.

Throughout the H-PREP program, students are taught principles that are foundational to professional health science programs in Pharmacy, Osteopathic Medicine, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Clinical Research, and Public Health. Through inter-professional opportunities, students will be able to:

• participate in interactive and inter-disciplinary classes, seminars, and case studies;
• build relationships with leaders in the healthcare profession;
• discover how to become more competitive applicants for health profession admissions;
• explore a variety of health profession career opportunities; and
• learn how to improve or strengthen professional admission test scores through a Kaplan PCAT, MCAT, and GRE review session.

Marie Davies says, “I decided to come to Campbell for the opportunities. Coming from a large university, UC Davis, to a small family feel had its benefits. It was so easy to get involved and participate as a pharmacy advocate, be a leader at the school and national level, and gain experience working right alongside faculty members. Mainly I came for the joint degree. Doing the MSCR joint PharmD program allowed me to keep my options open. Research triangle park is really close by, in Raleigh, and this offered many opportunities for internship and research. "I graduated from UC Davis with a BS. Not knowing what direction I wanted to take with pharmacy, I did a 5-year program receiving my MSCR and PharmD. This assured me I wanted a career in academia that encompassed research. I am now doing a post-graduate residency at the VA where I teach at UNC, precept students on rotation, get to participate in research, and get to have a broad array of outpatient and inpatient practice settings.”

Brooke Rawls says, “Choosing Campbell for my graduate studies was a no brain-er for me. I did undergraduate work at a large institution which I loved, but I wanted a more focused environment for my graduate work. Campbell provided me with perfect balance of professional guidance, community outreach, social networking and academic family support.” Her Story: I left NC State university after my Junior year in Zoology,Pre-Med Curriculum. I joined the Pharmacy Class of 2002 at Campbell. It was in the next 4 years that I not only found my love for medicine in pharmacy but also my husband. Those 4 years mark some of my fondest memories of learning experiences and friendships. Upon the completion of my third year I discovered my interest in Primary Care Medicine. I applied for a Campbell Residency in Primary Care. I was accepted in that position and completed a one year residency program with Dr. Steve Fuller. It was my residency experience that propelled me into my next journey, as a clinical pharmacist and innovator. One of my trusted professors in pharmacy School, Dr. Penny Shelton, introduced me to a gentleman that was looking for a chief pharmacist to help him get his pharmacy start up business off the ground, with a new approach to healthcare. I accepted the position as Director of Clinical Services at Physicians Pharmacy Alliance in 2003 post residency, and have since been elevated to Senior Vice President of Product Development and Clinical Initiatives. This job has been both fulfilling professionally and rewarding personally in my 9 year tenure. It is obvious that I wouldn't be where I am today without both the guidance and support of Campbell University's academic excellence and staff.

Janna Beavers says, “I chose CPHS because of the family feeling I had from the first moment I stepped on campus. I immediately felt as if I had a place at Campbell and that stayed true throughout pharmacy school. Campbell enabled me to take on leadership opportunities, plan events, and develop myself as a pharmacist and individual. "I started the joint PharmD/MSCR program in May 2008 and completed all of the MSCR coursework in the following year. I started my P1 year in August 2009. For the next few years, I was deeply involved in various student organizations on campus. I was the founding president of SCCP (Student College of Clinical Pharmacy) and the secretary of my class. I was also involved in other organizations such as Rho Chi, Kappa Psi, SSHP, and Phi Lambda Sigma. During my P3 year, I received the United States Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Practice Award. I completed three different research projects, one of which was my final MSCR project. I presented all three of these projects at national meetings such as AACP, ACCP, and ASHP. During my P4 year, I completed a project at WakeMed on monitoring anti-Xa levels to present at the ACCP and ASHP meetings. I received the ACCP Cardiology PRN Travel Award to aid in costs to attend the ACCP meeting. I was recognized as the student recipient at the Cardiology meeting at the meeting in Florida. I am currently applying for residencies and hope to have a career in clinical pharmacy specializing in cardiology." According to Janna, prospective students should choose Campbell University CPHS for the family atmosphere, leadership opportunities and thorough involvement with student organizations and because the faculty know students personally and help them achieve their goals!

"When I originally interviewed for pharmacy school, I did not know a single person in North Carolina. I was intrigued by the joint Pharm.D./MSCR program but honestly never envisioned moving across the country from Pella, Iowa to go to school in North Carolina. However, when I arrived and began to speak with the people in the pharmacy school, I realized God had other plans for me. Yes, the joint-degree was appealing but the people made all the difference. Additionally, for me, the fact that faith in the Lord still proved to be the foundation at Campbell gave me the security to venture out on my own from Iowa. The blessings I have received since doing so are too many to count. My road to Campbell has introduced me to my professional calling in life - to care and serve others as a faculty member and ambulatory care clinical pharmacist. Through the education, support, and training I have received at Campbell, I have gone and grown further in my academic career than I ever thought possible. I have learned from and now work with some of the most talented, inspiring, and compassionate leaders and teachers in pharmacy. This journey has also introduced me to some of my closest friends and even brought my entire family down to live in North Carolina! These past seven years with my Pharmacy Family at Campbell have challenged and inspired my walk with the Lord and helped me grow both personally and professionally. "During my time at Campbell I have completed my Pharm.D./MSCR and PGY-1 training with an emphasis in ambulatory care. Upon graduation, I had the honor of receiving the Facts and Comparisons 2011 Award of Excellence in Clinical Communications award. Currently, I am the first PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Resident for Campbell University. My primary clinic sites are Cary Healthcare Associates with Dr. Steve Fuller and Glenaire Retirement Community with Dr. Amber McLendon, both in Cary, North Carolina. I also precept fourth year pharmacy students, teach small and large group lectures for the pharmacy school in Buies Creek, and am a part of several service and leadership committees serving the school and students. I have enjoyed being very active in my church and home group in Raleigh and love exploring the beautiful state of North Carolina. I especially enjoy trying the great local restaurants and doing service work around the Raleigh area. "The Pharmacy Family at Campbell feels like home because you are cared for as an individual. You are supported and given many opportunities to grow and succeed in some of the best learning environments in the country. Additionally, the College has faculty and staff who are dedicated, kind, and committed to their own personal growth. During fourth year rotations, I was reminded I was in the right place when I realized that even though the rotation was difficult, I was learning a lot and having so much fun at the same time. During the beginning of December I interviewed for multiple faculty positions with other schools of pharmacy around the country. What I realized when it was all said and done, was there is truly no place like "home." I am very grateful to my Pharmacy Family at Campbell for making such a great impact on my life because now I know where I will always be able to call my home."
