About

The University of Chicago Divinity School is the graduate and professional school for the academic study of religion at the University of Chicago. We offer four degrees:

  1. The Master of Arts (AM) is a two-year foundational degree program for students wishing to pursue doctoral work or careers in such fields as publishing, government service, nonprofit administration, and teaching;
  2. The Master of Arts in Religious Studies (AMRS) is a one-year degree program offering an ancillary credential in religion for persons in other professional fields (e.g., law, medicine, business);
  3. The Master of Divinity (MDiv) is a three-year, intensive, cohort-based degree program for students pursuing careers in religious leadership in traditional, new, and emerging forms of ministry; and
  4. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is an advanced course of study preparing students for careers in field-defining research and teaching.

The Divinity School also offers dual degree programs with the University's Law School, Harris School of Public Policy, and School of Social Service Administration.

Tuition & Other Financial Information

All students who request it are eligible for financial aid, and the Divinity School offers financial aid awards on the basis of academic promise. In master's programs (MA, AMRS, MDiv), awards range from partial to full tuition scholarships, and some awards include yearly stipends of up to $12,000. All students admitted to the PhD program are eligible for a five-year award package, which provides full tuition coverage, student health insurance, an annual living stipend of $23,000, and two summer research stipends of $3,000 each.

Recognition & Awards

Members of the Divinity School faculty have won numerous fellowships and awards including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, the National Jewish Book Award, and the Humboldt-Stiftung Prize.
