About
The Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning Department at Utah State University offers 3 graduate degrees:
- Master's of Landscape Architecture - This is our most popular degree, and takes 2-3 years to complete, dependent on background and previous coursework. Starting salary for MLA graduates ranges from $50,000-$60,000. Most MLA graduates work for private firms, such as Design Workshop, while some MLA grads have chosen to work for the public sector in places like the Pocatello City Council, the Bureau of Land Management or the U.S. Forest Service.
- Master's of Environmental Planning - This degree focuses on climate change and sustainability. The degree takes 2 years to complete, and starting salary ranges between $35,000-$45,000. This degree promotes environmentally friendly policies and working with stakeholders to create unique, collaborative designs. Compared to the MLA degree, this degree is more policy based, and less design heavy.
- PhD in Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning - For students interested in becoming a professor of landscape architecture of environmental planning, USU's LAEP Department offers a 3-4 year program which emphasizes teaching and research. Students are required to teach classes and be evaluated by undergraduate students. Similarly, they are required to write grant proposals, publish journal articles, and work within the academic realm.
About LAEP:
The LAEP Department has 15 faculty members, all with varying backgrounds and professional experience. Each professor is engaged in grad student learning, and each serves on graduate student committees.
The MLA program welcomes a cohort of 10-15 per year. The Environmental Planning degree has a cohort of 5-7 each year, and the PhD cohort is 3-5.
All grad students are housed within the Graduate Studio, regardless of degree. Within the Grad Studio, students are provided with a standing desk, monitor, keyboard, mouse, lockers and pin-up space. There are also collaborative spaces for grad students to work together to solve challenging problems.
