Martin Family Farms History

Martin Family Farms is a 100 year old, 5th generation family farming company with deep roots in North Central Indiana.

 

The small family livestock and grain operation of the late 19th century passed on a strong focus of integrity and hardworking culture which has survived the years of commodity ups and downs.

 

Our business focus today is in modern Pork Production.

 

In the early 1980’s in the pork operation, animals were housed both inside and outside.  The farming operation prospered and expanded until the farm crisis of the early 1980’s.  At this point, the management continued to expand and challenge their intellect into other aspects of the food chain. The Martin Family decided to integrate into the Swine genetics business, retail feed as well as being linked with the packing aspects of the business.

 

In the early 1990’s after receiving a degree and fresh ideas, David and Brian Martin began careers with the family.  While continuing to develop a plan to create a business allowing opportunities for ownership of assets and self-employment.  They then purchased and constructed the current facility near Kingman, Indiana in 1996 called Hoosierland Pork.

 

By early 2007, the permitting process fir what would become North Fork Farms and Martin Family Farms had begun.  Getting permits for the 10,000 sow operation required several months and was not completed until fall of 2008.  The strategy of a large sow farm (farrowing unit only) where pigs are moved off site to finishing buildings continues to be utilized today.  This maximizes labor expertise at each site.

 

Since that time Brian has been fully and solely employed by Martin Family Farms.  David continues to support the operation while working full time with a farm management company who invests in many diverse agro-ventures and spends every spare moment aiding Martin Family Farms.  To this day, the company continues to thrive through the efforts and focus of Craig, Mark, David and Brian Martin and a team of awesome long time expert team members who guide the company.

 

Today, Martin Family Farms consists of 14,000 sows Farrow to Wean with accompanying finishing facilities to house 25,000 growing pigs.  Over the next several years finishing operations will continue to grow!
