About
Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle is the primary medical center for this community offering primary, specialty, and psychiatric care for the entire population. Our facility is a 312-bed acute care and level 3 trauma facility serving seven counties in Mississippi and Alabama. The facility and supporting clinics serve a wide and diverse socioeconomic population from the surrounding community and counties. The total population of our service area is approximately 225,000 with an age-specific division of 24.2% 0-17, 60.4% 18-64 and 15.4% 65 and older. Male vs. female population is fairly equivalent at 48% male and 52% female. Residents in the Internal Medicine program participate in patient care for adult patients, including a significant portion of older adults (65 and older), by providing care at the clinics, hospitals (medical center and psychiatric), and through continuity elder care facilities. BMH - GT supports a Transitional Care unit as well as an Adult Psychiatric unit. Residents see a broad range of patients in the Emergency Department with over 60,000 patients being seen and treated annually. The services range from trauma to urgent/ primary care. The facility is staffed with a robust Hospitalist service supported by a healthy number of subspecialty physicians. Residents are assigned patients depending on the rotation in the suggested areas. Additionally, they provide follow-up care through their clinic experiences for patients discharged from the Emergency Department and Inpatient facilities. For the resident continuity clinic, established patients are assigned to resident panels with the inception of residency. The program director reviews individual resident panels yearly regarding demographics of age and gender. Adjustments are made with the assignment of new patients as needed.
The mission of our Internal Medicine Residency Program is to produce well rounded, superiorly educated, professionally physicians who are able to deliver excellent care while contributing to the community in which they serve. Physicians educated in our program will be taught the qualities and skills necessary for a life time of learning with self and public education. We feel we present an opportunity for this process as we at BMH-GT possess a rich diversity of patients and pathology in area of great need for medical care expansion. At the same time, we possess a faculty eager to develop young physicians and mold them into care givers ready for the challenges of such community based medical care.
The Faculty at our facility are well- educated, well rounded with expertise in many medical fields. Our primary medical center, BMH-GT, though in a small community with a family atmosphere and feel, sees volume that compares to much larger facilities with vast disease process- hence the best of both worlds.
Because this training program is the first and only program at this site, all resources are tied into this program and community support for the success of developing excellent physicians is maximum. We feel this program is a win - win- the community is greatly enhanced by this program and embraces it whole heartedly, while those who are educated here will receive world class training.
Our Program Our Internal Medicine residency program is co-sponsored by Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle in Columbus, Mississippi. We are an Urban/ Rural program that is dedicated to creating outstanding internal medicine physicians with a commitment to providing care to patients and their families from all walks of life. We emphasize our responsibility to our community to assist the less fortunate among us by offering each individual innovative care following best practice models to achieve and maintain the highest standards. Additionally, we anticipate that the emergence of our program in to the health care community of Columbus will help to decrease hospital length of stay and readmissions by providing multidisciplinary team care environment that is focused on improving both the healthcare provided to our patients and the healthcare available in our community. To that end, our program curriculum was created to enhance the standard of care based on continually evolving evidence-based medicine and PDSA models as well as traditional standards and basic requirements to serve as the backbone for our program.
