Special Projects:
Peachtree Industrial Blvd Smart Corridor
One example of how Gwinnett is seeking to pioneer new transportation solutions is the Peachtree Industrial Blvd. Smart Corridor. This project will install technology that will enable traffic signals to communicate with drivers via a smart phone app or potentially directly to the vehicle. It could tell you how long until a signal changes, when you’re in a work zone, a school zone or which direction an emergency vehicle is approaching from. Transit buses and emergency vehicles will have the ability to change signals, ensuring buses stay on schedule and first responders arrive at the scene of an emergency safer and faster. The project will add this connected/autonomous vehicle technology to PIB from Peachtree Corners to Hall County and will begin installation in 2019. It will help reduce the number of crashes and enhance the flow of traffic.
Diverging Diamond Interchange
The Diverging Diamond Interchange's (DDI) innovative design relieves congestion, improves safety, and is less expensive than replacing or widening the bridge. A DDI shifts traffic to the opposite side of the road, making left turns onto the interstate easier and improving the flow of traffic across the bridge.
