About

Massey University veterinary program is currently ranked 28th in the world and was the first veterinary program in the Southern Hemisphere to gain American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accreditation.

Why study at Massey?

At Massey’s School of Veterinary Science (SoVS), we're not just about the books and the lab coats; we're about making a global impact, known far and wide for our top-notch veterinary education, groundbreaking research, and clinical services. The top 5 things you should know about our BVSc degree:

Fast Track Your Career: Why wait when you start now? No undergrad degree or pre-reqs needed to dive into our 5-year program (you're in Group 1 if this is you). This will often save time and money.  Already got the pre-reqs? You're Group 2, looking at a slightly shortened program and direct entry.

Globe-Trotter Ready: Expand your career options. Thanks to multiple accreditations (RCVS, AVBC, CVMA, AVMA, SAVA), you can take your skills global. Fun fact: we were the first in the southern hemisphere to receive AVMA accreditation which allows students to work in North America.

Middle-earth Magic: Ever dreamed of studying in one of the safest, most jaw-droppingly beautiful places on Earth? New Zealand's got you covered.

Affordable Excellence: Studying in New Zealand is often less expensive than most out-of-state options. More cost details can be found here.

Hands-On, interactive curriculum: Real-world experience in our four on-site hospitals (companion, production, equine, & wildlife) and 200ha of university farms. We consistently receive some of the highest rankings in the world from employers.

Take a look at the attached flyer for answers to most common questions about our BVSc degree. You’ll also find a snapshot of last year’s Group 1 student selection outcomes.

Pre-selection and professional phases
Our Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc), is a five-year (10 semester) programme offered solely on the Manawatū campus. The first semester (starting in February) is referred to as the ‘pre-selection’ semester. Depending on your performance in the pre-selection semester, you may be selected to the ‘professional phase’ beginning in July (4.5 years long).  Selection is competitive so focusing on great results for your first semester is vital.  It pays to come well prepared for the pre-selection semester.  Make sure you work on your people skills and get a good background in the sciences before joining us.

If you have met our pre requisite courses, you may be eligible to apply direct to our ‘professional phase.’
