The Carilion Clinic Emergency Department would like to offer a post-graduate Advanced Practice Fellowship Program for Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Emergency Medicine (EM) to those seeking advanced training and experience in the field of EM. This unique, intensive program will build upon the strength of our highly successful PA and NP EM practice already in place, combined with the largest and most effective emergency medicine physician practice in southwest Virginia. The fellowship will be a complement to the Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medicine Residency program, as NP and PA fellows will benefit from didactic and clinical experiences that mirror EM physician residency training.
Graduates of this one-year fellowship program will possess substantial skills, knowledge, and competencies required in the field of emergency medicine as the PA and NP professions continue to be ranked among the fastest growing career opportunities.
Fellows accepted into the program will be full-time employees of Carilion Clinic and eligible for full medical, dental, and disability benefits. They will also retain GME benefits of other fellows such as ACLS/ATLS/PALS/FCCS/AWLS certifications, subsidized healthcare, scrubs, lab coats, moving expenses, Blackberries, CME budget.
This dynamic program includes didactic instruction and clinical training components that two fellows will complete over 12 months. Orientation will be approximately six weeks long (EPIC, credentialing, etc).
Note: Fellows will also be sent to attend an ultrasound course during their fellowship.
Clinical time will be spent in various departments of Carilion Clinic, under the supervision and direction of Carilion faculty. Fellows will provide direct patient care managing non-emergent patients, and will be directly supervised during the care of higher acuity and emergent patients. They will be working alongside other residents, NPs and PAs, attendings in all sections of the emergency department, including the Rapid Care Unit, Main Side, Trauma/Overflow, and Pediatric ED. They will also take call on off service rotations such as orthopedics, trauma, etc.
