About

The University at Buffalo is the largest and most comprehensive institution in the State University of New York system, making it a premier, research-intensive public university. With more than 30,000 students, UB offers close to 100 undergraduate programs and more than 300 graduate and professional programs, including a strong core in health science and biomedical disciplines. The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is a cutting-edge center for teaching, research and clinical care in on our downtown medical campus, sparking a revitalization of New York state’s second-largest city.

Degrees/Programs Overview

The Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Sciences (PPBS) is the portal for entry into the Ph.D. programs in Biochemistry; Biomedical Engineering; Biomedical Informatics; Genomics, Genetics, and Bioinformatics; Microbiology and Immunology; Neuroscience; Oral Biology; Computational Cell Biology, Anatomy and Pathology; Pharmacology and Toxicology; Physiology and Biophysics; and Structural Biology at the University of Buffalo. In the first year, students complete interdisciplinary coursework and choose several  laboratories in which to rotate (out of more than 200 total laboratories), which leads to placement in the chosen department and the lab of a faculty mentor in the second year. The program is designed to meet the individual needs and interests of students whether they plan to enter careers in academia, industry or government.

Master's degree programs are offered in the following disciplines:

Plus, we offer the Natural Sciences Interdisciplinary MS Program, designed to provide a broad foundation in the biomedical sciences in preparation for professional health degrees or for students still deciding on the next step in their career path.

Tuition and Other Financial Information

All students admitted to the PPBS program are offered a generous financial package, including a full tuition and fees waiver and an annual stipend of $31,000. Our goal is to give students the financial security needed to focus on their research project.

Funding is not available for master's students.

School History

The University at Buffalo (UB) was founded in 1846 with the School of Medicine as its first division.  As the university grew, programs were added in law, dentistry, and pharmacy, among others. UB affiliated with the State University of New York in the 1960’s as part of a major expansion of the state’s system of public higher education. Since that time, UB has experienced incredible growth in its scope of programs and the size of its faculty and student body. The latest addition to the university’s physical footprint is its presence on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in downtown Buffalo, where the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences relocated in 2017, joining our local partners in health care delivery and research.  Our new building is a highlight in this video!
