The University of Sussex is a leading research-intensive university near Brighton, which was ranked the happiest city in England for students with 93% saying they're ‘very happy’ with their education and city life (Student Living Survey by Sodexo 2017).

Sussex ranks highly in UK university league tables, as well as being ranked number one in the world for Development Studies (QS world rankings 2015, 2017 and 2018) and in the top 50 in the world for Business and Economics, Media and Communications, International Relations, Geography and Politics (THE world rankings 2018). 

The University also takes pride in its international outlook, with staff and students from more than 140 countries.

In the The Times Higher Education University Rankings 2018–19, we have been:

  • ranked 6th in the UK for Business and Economics
  • ranked 7th in the UK for Media and Communications, Anthropology, International Relations, International Development, Geography and Politics
  • ranked 13th in the UK for Law.

World rankings

147th in the world: The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018–19

In the The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018–19, we have been:

  • ranked 50th in the world for Business and Economics
  • ranked 39th in the world for Media and Communications, International Relations, Development Studies, Geography and Politics
  • ranked 53rd in the world for Law.

In the QS World Rankings 2017, we have been:

  • rated number one in the world for Development Studies
  • highly rated for research.

Student survey and guide ratings

In the National Student Survey 2016, our results included:

  • 89% for student satisfaction
  • 92% said staff are good at explaining things
  • 90% said they have been able to contact staff when they need to
  • 91% said the library resources and services are good enough for their needs.

In The Which? University Guide, we were rated at:

  • 87% (highly rated) for student satisfaction
  • 87% (highly rated) for diverse local nightlife
  • 87% (highly rated) for rich political scene.

In a survey by accommodation providers Student Living by Sodexo, Brighton was ranked the happiest city in England for students, with 93% of University of Sussex and University of Brighton students surveyed saying they’re ‘very happy’ with their education and city life.


Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014

Sussex is a leading research university, as reflected in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Over 75% of research activity at Sussex is categorised as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in terms of originality, significance and rigour

Individual highlights of the REF 2014 results include:

  • Sussex History was the highest rated History submission in the UK for the quality of its research outputs 
  • the Sussex English submission rose from 31st to 9th across the UK since the last research assessment exercise in 2008
  • 84% of the University’s research impact in Psychology was rated as the top possible grade, 4* 
  • Sussex Geography had the most 4*-rated research impact of any Geography submission across the UK.

Overall, the University was placed 36th (of multi-disciplinary institutions) by grade point average (GPA).


Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF)

The Teaching Excellence Framework is a government-run exercise to evaluate the quality of the undergraduate student experience in higher education institutions in the UK.

We were awarded a silver rating in the 2017 TEF submissionand as part of our submission, Sussex was strongly praised by HEFCE for: 

  • our outstanding employment strategy, with the proportion of Sussex graduates in highly-skilled jobs or further study 12 per cent above benchmark expectations
  • the very high proportion of Sussex students from all backgrounds who complete their course and go on to highly-skilled employment or further study.

As well as our employment strategy and the performance of under-represented groups in our student body, the TEF panel assessors said our submission reflects:

  • our culture that values excellent teaching through career progression, professional development and teaching awards
  • the significant investment in the University estate and high-quality physical and digital resources that aids student learning
  • our students’ consistent and frequent exposure to, and engagement in, cutting-edge research
  • optimum levels of student engagement and commitment to learning, secured through excellent teaching and assessment practices.

Life in Brighton – the happiest city in England for students

A sunny seaside city with the buzz of London – there can be few better places to be a student than Brighton.

Nightlife

When the sun goes down Brighton comes into its own. Ranked by students as the top university in the south of England for student nightlife (Which? University Student Survey 2016), Brighton has some of the best club nights in the country, along with fantastic pubs, restaurants, independent cinemas and a great live music scene.

Music

Music is a way of life in Brighton. Walk around the city and you might bump into legends past and present who’ve found a home in this unique location. With an estimated 500 bands in the city, and gigs every night of the week, you’re bound to find something for you.

Internationally, the city is known for The Great Escape, the UK’s leading showcase for new music, featuring hundreds of bands in over 30 venues in a three-day event.

Culture

Throughout May the city hosts England’s biggest arts festival. Brighton Festival features theatre, music, art and visual media by leading names from around the world. And all year round there are plays, art exhibitions, gigs and events at many of the theatres, pubs, museums and galleries in the city.

Brighton is a hub for the performing arts. Venues range from small theatres above pubs to The Theatre Royal, featuring West End productions.

Brighton is also home to the Duke of York’s Picture House, an art house cinema, which is claimed to be the oldest in the country. There are also two multiplex cinemas in the city.

Food and drink

Brighton is crammed with cafés, restaurants and coffee shops. Whether you want to dine in style or grab a cheap deal, take afternoon tea or try an award-winning curry, you’ll find something to suit your taste and your budget. Brighton also has some of the best vegetarian restaurants in the country.

Sport

If you’re the sporty type, or just a spectator, the city has plenty of opportunities to get involved:

  • The Amex Stadium, close to our campus, is home to Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, newly promoted to the English Premier League for the 2017/18 season
  • watch cricket at Sussex County Cricket Club in nearby Hove
  • join 18,000 other runners through the streets of Brighton for the Brighton Marathon - there’s also a half marathon in February
  • ride the London to Brighton Bike Ride, where 30,000 cyclists complete the 50-mile course from the capital to Brighton.

The seafront is also a great place to get active, with sea swimming, windsurfing, kitesurfing, wakeboarding, sailing and paddle boarding.

Our campus also has fantastic sports facilities and lots of teams to get involved with.

An international city

Grab some Mexican street food, try Pan-Asian fine dining or buy ingredients from an Afro-Caribbean or Asian supermarket. Brighton's international community and culture means you are never far from home comforts or trying something new.

You can go to a range of events that celebrate Brighton's diversity, including:

  • CINECITY, which showcases films from all over the globe
  • festivals such as The Costume Games, which celebrate individual countries and cultures
  • Brighton’s range of expat groups, which host formal and informal events.

There are also three mosques and an Islamic centre, Catholic and Anglican Churches, a Buddhist centre, four synagogues, and Greek and Coptic Orthodox churches in Brighton and the local area.
