Moravian University was founded in 1742 on a belief that education is essential for all, without regard for gender or social standing. It was a revolutionary idea at the time, but that didn't stop us. In fact, Moravian thrives on new and innovative ideas and has been embracing them since the beginning. Moravian's Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, housed in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences in the School of Natural & Health Sciences, embraces a unique interprofessional focus with physical therapy, athletic training, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy students learning side by side.

The DPT program aims to develop ethical and skilled physical therapists who provide client-centered, interprofessional care.  Upon completion of the DPT program, students will be reflective and inquisitive professionals who are lifelong learners and educators. Program graduates will be poised to positively influence the health and quality of life of diverse populations and the profession through community outreach and advocacy.

The curriculum is created with the goal of creating DPT generalists able to practice in diverse clinical settings upon graduation. Moravian embraces active learning principles and immerses students in the clinic early in the program allowing students to apply knowledge and skills in real-life environments. The eight semester program (2.5 years)  implements a distinctive approach of student-directed learning in a team-based format rather than traditional lectures.

Moravian's DPT faculty are interprofessional leaders, innovative teachers and researchers. The combination of board certified clinical specialists and doctorally trained faculty allow students to obtain a world-class education from experts with varied areas of expertise.

Moravian's state of the art facilities include a virtual cadaver lab and advanced clinical simulation center which incorporates high and low fidelity simulators and standardized patient actors. This allows students to practice skills that mimic authentic clinical encounters. In the 36 weeks of full-time clinical education experiences, students can apply their knowledge in diverse settings and learn to treat a spectrum of patient populations across the lifespan.

Upon graduation, an entry-level professional DPT degree will be conferred which allows graduates to apply for licensure to practice as physical therapists. The DPT program was granted candidacy status by the Commission of Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) on April 27th, 2021 and will be eligible for full accreditation in the Summer of 2023.

Effective April 27th 2021, Moravian University has been granted Candidate for Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 3030 Potomac Ave., Suite 100, Alexandria, Virginia 22305-3085; phone: 703-706- 3245; email: accreditation@apta.org). If you need to contact the program/institution directly, please call (610) 625-7213 or email riopelm@moravian.edu. Candidate for Accreditation is an accreditation status of affiliation with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education that indicates the program may matriculate students in technical/professional courses. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status does not assure that the program will be granted Initial Accreditation.
