WMU Graduate Education Fast Facts
- WMU has engaged in graduate education for more than 60 years, and has awarded nearly 66,000 graduate degrees to date. Each year WMU welcomes over 1,000 new graduate students.
- Nearly 5,000 graduate students study and conduct research at WMU, representing 21% of WMU's total student body.
- Over 100 doctoral degrees have been awarded annually for the past six years, with 117 awarded during 2011-12, along with nearly 1,300 Master's degrees.
WMU Points of Pride
- The WMU Stryker School of Medicine welcomed 54 students to its inaugural class in fall 2014.
- U. S. News & World Report (2014) ranks 16 of WMU's graduate programs among the top 200 in the nation, and five of these are among the top 50. Numerous other programs are highly ranked by various professional organizations and societies. WMU has made the magazine's annual list of top-tier universities for the last 24 years.
- WMU is part of an alliance to broaden the diversity of students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduate programs, and since 2004, has doubled the number of graduate students from underrepresented groups studying STEM at WMU.
- WMU is consistently ranked as a university that is "military friendly" and "Best for Vets". The university's VetSuccess on Campus program is the first VA student success program of its kind in Michigan.

- WMU has again been called a "best buy, top 100" school by Washington Monthly.The rankings are based on to what extent colleges produce cutting-edge research and new Ph.Ds., encourage students to give back to the nation through service, and recruit graduate low-income students.
- WMU has been hosting Fulbright scholars since the early 1980s and fellows since 2004. In 2014, nearly 40 Fulbright scholars were studying at WMU. Other fellowships, including the King-Chavez-Parks and the Thurgood Marshall are available to qualified WMU graduate students.
