New Brunswick Theological Seminary (NBTS) is a place where men and women can prepare for many types of ministry, both within the church, and beyond the church structure. One Campus Two Locations:

New Brunswick, New Jersey, in the heart of the Rutgers University College Avenue campus - 45 minutes from NYC.  Queens, New York, at St John’s University.  New Brunswick classes take place Monday - Saturday, day evening and weekend / New York classes take place Monday - Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.

NBTS Program Offerings


Master of Divinity (M.Div.):

The Master of Divinity degree program is designed to prepare students for a wide range of Christian ministry and provides the solid foundation needed for ordination. It is also excellent preparation for a hospital, prison, or military chaplaincy, a cross-cultural pastoral ministry, global mission, social services work, youth ministry, or further graduate study and teaching.

The M.A. concentration in Ministry and Community Leadership is ideal for ordained and non-ordained individuals who want to enhance their ministry, leadership, and social engagement skills.  Whether your calling involves leading in the church, faith-based or secular non-profit organizations, public health, or social service and community outreach programs, or working as an advocate and organizer of grassroots efforts, this professional degree program will prepare you to transform your church, organization, community, and society-at-large both now and in the future.

Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.): 

The Doctor of Ministry professional degree recognizes the vital work that an effective leader can contribute to the transformation and sustenance of communities. Graduates of the NBTS D.Min. program will be authorities in their chosen concentrations, well prepared to make significant contributions that result in powerful and effective change. NBTS currently offers three D.Min. degree concentrations. 

Our mission is simple: to inform, inspire, positively shape and enhance the work of reflective practitioners who desire to engage, assess, and advance their spiritual formation, knowledge base, and ability to be a transformative ministerial presence in and for the communities they serve.

NBTS currently offers three D.Min. degree concentrations:

  • Metro-Urban Ministry (currently accepting applications for Fall 2017)
  • Pastoral Care & Counseling/Pastoral Theology
  • Transformational Preaching

The D.Min. degree can be completed in three years. Coursework is completed in an on-line format and cohorts gather for one-week intensives for the first two years and complete the project in the final year.

Metro-Urban Ministry

The Doctor of Ministry in Metro-Urban Ministry is designed for ministers with a heart for the city and a commitment to learning about and engaging the challenges of urban landscapes. This D.Min. concentration nurtures a theological understanding for encountering, engaging and enhancing the complex work of ministers called to urban settings and the lives of the city dwellers they seek to serve. The D.Min. Metro-Urban Ministry concentration nurtures a theological understanding of the life and work of the church in urban communities. Through a learning process that deepens theological astuteness and sharpens ministerial skills, graduates are able to develop and lead ministries of measurably increased discernment, empowerment, collaboration and transformation.  This concentration is offered in collaboration with Rutgers University’s Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.

The cohort will meet online in eleven-week trimesters and will include six one-week intensive urban encounters in:
