* Marty Cooper (BS 1950, MS 1957) led the team at Motorola that invented the world's first cellular telephone

 

* Charles Pierce (BS 1901) became the US's first African-American Chemical Engineer & Gloria Ray Karlmark (BS 1965) challenged separate but equal as a member of the Little Rock Nine

 

* Valdas Adamkus (BS 1961, hon Ph.D. 1999) was the first post-Soviet president of Lithuania; he also was one of the highest-ranking officials in the US EPA

 

* Rajeev Chandrasekhar (MS 1998) co-invented the original Pentium computer chip, created one of India's largest cell phone companies, currently leads a major venture capital firm, and has served in the Indian parliament
