Important Requirements for candidates looking to participate in this Virtual Career Fair:

To teach abroad, know that each government has the same visa restrictions for teachers. If you don't meet the following requirements, you should not apply. Please understand we don't want to waste your time or our schools' time.

  1. Citizenship
    • Must have held a passport from one of the following countries for a minimum of 15 years:
      • Australia
      • Canada
      • Ireland
      • New Zealand
      • South Africa
      • The United Kingdom
      • The United States
  2. Age
    • Must be between the ages of 22 and 54
  3. Degree
    • Must have a Bachelor's Degree or be interested in volunteer/internship opportunities as an undergrad

Upon registration, you'll receive instructions/tutorial in how to navigate the fair (as well as tips on preparation, etiquette, technology and chat room activity).

What to teach, when and where? The November 11th and 12th 2015 fair is limited to 1000 teacher attendees (filling up fast!). Expected schools attending are between 50-75 plus. The fair is only for teaching ESL (English as a Second Language). If you're a certified K-12 teacher, attend our K-12 fair in March. If you're an inexperienced K-12 teacher or not a certified teacher, you should definitely consider attending. Most ESL schools/programs allow you to teach smaller classes on occasion each week i.e. (cooking, science, math, geography, music, etc). You'll have your chance to keep classes interesting and each school will have a different curriculum. Most of our opportunities are in China, Korea, Japan, Turkey, Vietnam, Thailand, Chile, UAE and Spain. Please wait until two weeks prior to the fair for an updated list. (See requirements on registration page)

Language: Although you're not required to learn the native language, it is only helpful to learn a bit before you go abroad. Undoubtedly, you'll learn key words and phrases from colleagues and new friends while there. We highly recommend getting a language partner when abroad, around your age if possible. It's never a bad idea to get and study a phrasebook before going. Amazon.com has plenty of affordable, used guides.

Salaries/hours/visa/vacation: They will certainly differ around the world, especially in regards to cost of living and city location. Many schools will provide $1,500, $2,000 or much more than that plus some nice benefits such as airfare, housing and health insurance, whereas some schools might be more volunteer-based with less options, yet still are great opportunities. In cases of paid opportunities, some teachers can and will save 35-50% of their annual salaries (usually paid once per month). Other teachers highly prioritize traveling as much as they can in their free time and don't save much. That is great too! Teachers usually teach on a M-F schedule, varying by country, but can teach anywhere from 3-7+ hours daily. Of course the salary will reflect that. All schools and programs will have staff that can assist you with the visa application process. Do not expect schools to pay for your documents, however, it's quite cheap to process items like your background check, passport photos, etc. As for vacations, nearly all schools and programs will provide a minimum two weeks of paid vacation, while other programs may provide more. We encourage all new teachers especially to think of it as starting a corporate job, where employers give a minimum of two paid weeks of vacation. The school will decide which weeks you will all take (during winter and summer break). We encourage you not to think of it as synonymous with the "summers off" schedule we are somewhat used to in America and the West for teachers. This is not the case, as all ESL schools and programs are year round. Expect to receive up to fifteen or more paid national holidays, depending on the country you are placed in, which are essentially "mini vacations". Other full time programs may offer additional benefits such as airfare in full time teaching contracts.

Employers: In the weeks leading up to the fair, there will be the most updated school list of those attending the fair, along with the countries they are in and the age groups they need teachers for. They'll also share with you the timeline they are hiring for, as most programs hire and place teachers monthly. The fair is chat-room style where you can enter each virtual booth you choose to and introduce yourself just like you would to an employer at a physical fair. Upon entering the chat room, each school/program will have access to your resume you've submitted upon registration. You can enter chat rooms with only the employers you are interested in, but we recommend you speak to as many as you can.
